Let's not forget perhaps the most popular of them all, Everix Bakery, on the corner of West Second Street and Military Road. Not only did they sell out of that location, but for over 40 years, they partnered with Crouch Brothers who sold their products at their stores.
Gerhard Quality Baking Co. on North Macy Street baked Town Talk Bread and Blue Bird Bakery, on Western Avenue across from Oscar's was a very popular bakery, both wholesale and retail. South Main Street was the hot spot for bakeries with no less than six located in that part of town.
specializes in buns. Although I am not familiar with Bread of Life and Pan O Gold, we must not forget them. Richard and Sons, at 88 Forest Ave., is strictly wholesale and specializes in Danish cakes and turtle cookies. They have been there since 1988.
Bygone bakeries unlock sweet memories
Other bakeries of years gone past were Lenburg's on East First Street and Tasty Bakery on South Main Street.
How many of our readers can remember them? There was Barker Bakery, Brick's Bakery, Omar Bakery, Otto's Bakery, Snow Bakery and Wendt Bakery.
Now, fast forward to today and it is an entirely different story. Most of today's bakeries are in our supermarkets, one exception being Bryanna's Bakery on the corner of Sixth Street and South Park Avenue. Bob and Bonnie's is a fantastic doughnut shop and Baker's Pride I think Air Yeezy Boots
Now we come to the so called thrift stores. I have been told that first such store was started on Main Street back in the 1960's by interstate Brands Corp., and later moved to the present location on South Military Road where it was best known as Mrs. Karl's. It was owned for many years by Doris Rieder, who six years ago sold it to Charlene Gessner. Today, it is known as the Ol' Bread Box. There isn't very much in the line of bakery that you can't find in her store. My fond memories come from the thrift store that was located on North Hickory Street just south of Capelle Brothers and Diedrich Construction Company. The place was named Dick Brothers Bakery and being just a Air Max Womens Black And White few blocks from our home, we shopped there quite often. I will never forget when we needed any bakery, my wife always said, "Go down to the used bread store and pick up some bread or whatever." God bless her. She is probably laughing right now.
Here in our city, we have, over the years, been blessed with many exceptionally fine bakers and bakeries. Going as far back as the early 1940s, Fond du Lac was home to as many as 12 bakers, both retail and wholesale.
chocolate variety of sweet rolls. They still talk about that today.
Bread has been around forever, (remember about Jesus with the loaves and fishes), but when we moved to Fond du Lac, I only remember Town Talk and Wonder Bread. A bit of history tells us that Wonder Bread first sold in the US in 1921 and pre sliced in the 1930. That led to the phrase, "The greatest thing since sliced bread."
North Main Street had Hahn's Bakery with Eric's Bakery some years later. Delicious Bakery at 10 W. Division St., and Van's Bakery at 33 Forest Ave. were very close to Main Street.
If I missed some, I am truly sorry.
Now that we have established that ice cream is the number one dessert in this country, we ice cream lovers have to set aside any smugness we might have and admit that there are other desserts, especially the products of bakers and bakeries.

My personal story about Everix was whenever my wife would make spaghetti. She would send me to Everix to pick up a loaf of Vienna bread with sesame seeds to have with our meal. Today, its garlic bread, which is just not the same or as good. If you handed out stars for quality, Everix certainly would have been a five star bakery. Mass at St. Mary's and after Mass I would stop at Drexell's Bakery and pick up a sweet roll for our four oldest kids to have for breakfast on school days. For Dick, a Persian. John liked a Long John.
