It served with No 3 Group Bomber Command for most of the war, flying some of the most dangerous missions against naval, industrial and other targets in Europe.

As she grew up, Linda became determined to piece together the story of the uncle she never knew and embarked on a research project that has turned up photographs and documents about him.

"It must have been a terrible shock to lose their first born," says Linda, 47, who also lives in Calverton and is an enthusiastic member of the local Royal British Legion branch.

Sgt Perkins' comrades were: Flight Sergeant Hilton MacKay Carter, air gunner, Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), aged 22; Sgt William Denis Dale, flight engineer, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR); Flt Officer Douglas Nugent Donald, air bomber, RCAF, 23; Flt Officer Robert Verdun Kingdon, pilot, RCAF; FS Donald Fraser Miller, wireless operator/air gunner, RAFVR; Sgt Donald Parker, air gunner, RAFVR, 19; Warrant Officer James Walter Pellant, air bomber, RCAF, 21; WO William Arthur Routley, navigator, RCAF, 31; and WO Robert George Wilson, air gunner, RCAF.

It became 14 Squadron and, on April 1, 1918, the day the Royal Air Force came into being, its number was changed to 214.

"I have such a fascination with the war, I am just so proud of all of them not just heroes to me, but legends."

The Calverton teenager was just 19 when his plane, Flying Fortress HB785 of 214 (Federated Malay States) Squadron, was shot down on a raid designed to destroy a synthetic oil plant near Leipzig.

Whether it was anti aircraft fire or a German fighter plane, exactly how HB785 was lost is not known. But there were no survivors when the huge bomber crashed in the Black Forest.

It was disbanded in 1919 but resurrected as a bomber squadron in 1935.

"He should not be forgotten. He was an air gunner, one of the most dangerous jobs there was," she says.

"Today and every day I think of my uncle Walter. I have found it all very disturbing but it has made me more determined to march for our heroes on Remembrance Day and to honour and respect them."

In September 1941, the squadron was honoured by being adopted by the British Malayan Federation and had "Federated Malay States" officially incorporated in its title. The FMS put up the funds to raise the squadron and equip it.

Walter was the eldest son of Calverton miner William Perkins Air Max Black Speckle and his wife, Alice Gladys.

The origins of 214 Squadron go back to 1917, when 7A Squadron was formed for heavy night bombing.
